Preparing Your Trees for a Michigan Winter
Michigan winters can be rough on trees, even the ones that are native to our area. Some emerge in spring

Tree trimming is an important aspect of tree maintenance that provides a wealth of benefits. A few of the most noteworthy advantages pruning provides include:
Trimming or removing dead, dying, diseased, or unstable branches reduces the risk of damage to your property or injury to people (and pets) passing under the tree.
Proper tree pruning helps to support the health of a tree by allowing it to allocate resources more efficiently. It also helps reduce the chances of diseases, pests, or decay spreading.
Pruning can encourage a tree to grow more foliage by improving its overall health. Plus, trimming a branch can stimulate new leaf production in nearby branches.
Pruning allows more sunlight to reach the tree’s canopy and improves airflow, which can help prevent fungal and bacterial issues from developing.
Trees may block sidewalks, driveways, sightlines, or things like power lines. But professional pruning can remove the branches in these areas and restore complete access.
While every tree has its own beauty, most look their best with regular pruning. This helps maintain a healthy canopy with only live, thriving branches and keeps the tree’s shape looking appealing.
Pruning trees properly and at the right time of year can boost flower and fruit production. This is why orchards follow strict pruning schedules to maximize yield.
Skilled arborists can often control the size of a tree through the careful pruning of key branches. But for the best results, it’s important to initiate this kind of pruning routine early in the tree’s life.
Pruning supports overall tree health and lowers the risk of large branch breaks, which can expose trees to pests and diseases. It’s an effective way to help extend the lifespan of your trees.
Because you can have your trees pruned to accomplish a number of different goals, arborists have developed a number of different tree pruning methods and strategies to achieve the desired results. A few of the most common tree pruning services Treemendous Tree Care clients require include:
Crown thinning involves carefully and selectively removing branches within a tree’s canopy to improve airflow and sunlight penetration. This is usually done on mature trees, while maintaining the overall shape of the canopy.
Crown raising, or crown lifting, involves removing lower branches of a tree to create more clearance for people, vehicles, or structures beneath it. This type of pruning is commonly used on mature trees in urban or suburban areas.
Crown reduction reduces the overall size or height of a tree without the risk of decay associated with "topping." It also helps maintain an attractive canopy shape that’s suitable for the tree’s species.
Crown cleaning refers to the selective removal of dead, dying, or damaged branches within a tree's canopy. While this type of pruning doesn’t usually reduce the canopy’s size or improve airflow, it helps support the tree’s health and enhances its safety.
Pollarding is a specialized pruning technique that helps keep a tree small through annual trims. It’s not suitable for all tree species and must be done correctly to avoid damaging the tree’s health, but it can be an excellent option for small spaces.
These two similar techniques aim to achieve specific, often unique, aesthetic goals. For example, trees can be pruned to grow flat against a wall, or shaped into distinct forms like spheres.
Structural pruning is typically done when trees are young. The goal is to encourage proper growth, structure, and form, helping prevent future issues and supporting the tree's overall health.
Homeowners and property managers should always keep an eye out for a few signs and symptoms that indicate their trees may require pruning. Always contact a professional arborist if you see any of the following signs:
Dead or dying branches are almost always a safety risk, especially when located near people or property. They can also signal the presence of pests or disease.
Diseased branches or those with decay should be removed promptly to prevent the spread of the issue and give your trees the best chance for full recovery.
Branches that have suffered damage from severe weather or some other cause should be evaluated and potentially removed. This can help keep your trees safe and prevent injuries or property damage.
Branches that cross or rub against each other should typically be removed, as they can cause damage over time and may lead to bark inclusions.
Trees that produce too many internal branches may be at risk of fungal and bacterial diseases, as they don’t allow sufficient amounts of air or sun through the canopy.
Some trees grow unevenly, which can shift their center of gravity and make them more prone to issues like windthrow. Pruning is usually recommended to restore balance and stability.
Tree branches that grow between power lines, rub against structures, or block key access paths should be removed to clear these areas and prevent potential issues.
While some trees are purposely installed in places to block sightlines, this isn’t always desired. But trees that grow in a manner that blocks a view can usually be pruned to eliminate this problem.
When trees aren’t producing enough fruit or flowers, pruning can help. However, it’s crucial to make the correct cuts and prune at the right time of year for the best results.
There’s one more sign that you may need professional tree pruning: It has been more than 3 to 5 years since they were last pruned. Even trees that don’t exhibit any of the signs discussed above will generally benefit from regular trims, so contact Treemendous Tree Care and let us schedule a pruning visit today!
