The Fastest-Growing Trees for Michigan Yards: Ones to Plant and Ones to Avoid

Skip to content Whether you’re caring for a small cherry tree or a group of towering oaks, regular pruning is key to keeping them healthy, safe, and looking their best. Tree trimming is an important aspect of tree maintenance that provides a wealth of benefits. A few of the most noteworthy advantages pruning provides include:
Clearing out dead, dying, diseased, or weak branches lowers the risk of damage to your property and keeps anyone under the tree—people or pets—safe.
Good pruning helps trees stay healthy by letting them use water and nutrients more effectively. It also cuts down the chances of pests, disease, and rot taking hold.
Pruning improves a tree’s overall health, which can lead to more foliage growth. Removing a branch can also prompt surrounding branches to grow new leaves.
Pruning opens up the canopy to more sunlight and better airflow, making it harder for fungal and bacterial issues to develop.
Trees may block sidewalks, driveways, sightlines, or things like power lines. But professional pruning can remove the branches in these areas and restore complete access.
Every tree has its own unique appeal, but regular pruning keeps that beauty in check. It strengthens the canopy with healthy, living branches and helps the tree hold a clean, well-shaped look.
Pruning trees the right way and at the right time of year can increase flower and fruit production. That’s why orchards stick to strict pruning schedules for optimal results.
Experienced arborists can manage a tree’s size by selectively pruning the right branches. Getting into this habit early in the tree’s life delivers the best long-term results.
Pruning helps keep trees healthy and reduces the chance of major branch breaks that can invite pests and disease. It’s a great way to extend your tree’s lifespan.
Because you can have your trees pruned to accomplish a number of different goals, arborists have developed a number of different tree pruning methods and strategies to achieve the desired results. A few of the most common tree pruning services Treemendous Tree Care clients require include:
Crown thinning means removing select branches from within the canopy to boost airflow and let in more sunlight. It’s usually done on mature trees and keeps the tree’s natural shape intact.
Crown raising, also known as crown lifting, removes a tree’s lower branches to provide more clearance for people, vehicles, or nearby structures. It’s commonly used on mature trees in urban or suburban areas.
Crown reduction trims down a tree’s height or overall size while avoiding the decay issues caused by “topping.” It also keeps the canopy looking balanced and fitting for the type of tree.
Crown cleaning involves carefully removing dead, dying, or damaged branches from a tree’s canopy. It doesn’t usually change the size or boost airflow, but it does improve the tree’s health and makes the area around it safer.
Pollarding is a pruning technique used to keep a tree small through annual trimming. It’s not suitable for all tree species and must be done correctly to avoid damage, but it’s ideal for limited spaces.
These two methods are often used to create specific visual effects. For instance, trees can be pruned to grow flat along a wall or shaped into eye-catching forms like spheres.
Structural pruning is usually done when trees are young. It promotes strong growth, proper form, and structure, helping prevent future problems and supporting long-term health.
Homeowners and property managers should always keep an eye out for a few signs and symptoms that indicate their trees may require pruning. Always contact a professional arborist if you see any of the following signs:
Dead or dying branches pose a real danger, especially around homes, people, or vehicles. They might also be a sign of pests or underlying disease.
Diseased or decaying branches should be removed quickly to prevent the issue from spreading and to give your trees the best chance at a full recovery.
If branches have been damaged by storms or other events, it’s important to have them checked and possibly removed. Taking action early helps protect your tree and lowers the risk of injury or damage.
Branches that cross or rub against each other should usually be trimmed back. Over time, they can cause damage and lead to weak spots like bark inclusions.
Trees with too many internal branches can block sunlight and airflow, increasing the risk of fungal and bacterial diseases.
When a tree grows unevenly, it can throw off its balance and increase the risk of falling in strong winds. Pruning is often the best way to restore stability and keep it secure.
Branches that touch power lines, lean on buildings, or block walkways need to be removed to keep things safe and avoid bigger problems down the road.
Some trees are meant to block sightlines, but that’s not always the case. If a tree ends up blocking a view, pruning is often an effective way to correct it.
If your trees aren’t giving you the fruit or flowers you expect, pruning might help. Just make sure it’s done at the right time and with the right cuts to get the best results.
If it’s been more than 3 to 5 years since your last pruning, that’s another clear sign it’s time to call in a professional. Even trees that don’t exhibit any of the signs discussed above will generally benefit from regular trims, so contact Treemendous Tree Care and let us schedule a pruning visit today!
