Preparing Your Trees for a Michigan Winter
Michigan winters can be rough on trees, even the ones that are native to our area. Some emerge in spring
Skip to content Cutting down a dead or damaged tree might feel like the toughest part—until you’re stuck with a large, unattractive stump. But a stump is more than just an eyesore. It can be a tripping hazard, invite pests and wildlife, and even spread disease to healthy trees nearby.
That’s why it’s best to remove stumps sooner rather than later. At Treemendous Tree Care, we make stump removal easy and hassle-free for homeowners and businesses across Fraser, Michigan.
Removing stumps is a crucial finishing step after tree removal—but it’s equally important to have the right team take care of the job.
This isn’t a task for someone with a truck and a rented grinder. Too much can go wrong. An inexperienced team might leave parts of the stump behind, tear up your yard, hit underground utility lines, or even spread disease to nearby trees.
Instead, contact the professionals at Treemendous Tree Care! We have a team of stump-grinding professionals who have the tools, equipment, and expertise to get the job done correctly (and safely)!
Some folks think stump removal is optional, but we usually suggest it for both homeowners and businesses. Here are a few solid reasons to go ahead and have those stumps ground down or completely removed:
Tree stumps pose real tripping hazards, and on commercial properties, they can even open the door to liability claims or lawsuits if someone gets hurt.
Running a lawnmower over a tree stump can do real damage to the machine—and in the worst cases, it might send broken blade pieces flying, turning them into dangerous projectiles.
Tree stumps can draw a wide range of pests—rats, mice, chipmunks, snakes, and frogs often move in. They also make ideal hiding spots for insects like bees, wasps, termites, roaches, and spiders.
Decaying stumps often become breeding grounds for harmful fungi and bacteria. As they break down, these microbes can spread and pose risks to your family, pets, and nearby trees.
Trees boost curb appeal, but stumps do the exact opposite. They leave your yard looking messy and neglected—not the kind of first impression you want to make.
One benefit of removing a tree is that it opens up space to plant something new—whether it’s flowers, shrubs, or even another tree. But you can’t do that until the old stump and roots are completely cleared away.
Tree stumps can sometimes send up new shoots that develop into small trunks. The issue is, these shoots are often poorly anchored, making them unstable and potentially dangerous as they grow.
Tree stumps can lower your property’s value because potential buyers often see them as an added expense or project they’ll need to take care of.

While stump removal services all seek to achieve the same basic goal, we do offer a few different options designed to suit property owners and managers in different situations. There are essentially three options available:
Stump grinding is one of our most in-demand services—and it’s easy to see why. Using a powerful grinder with a sharp, rotating blade, we reduce the stump to wood chips and dust. In most cases, the roots are left in place while we focus on the stump itself. We can grind it flush with the ground or several inches below the surface—whichever option works best for you.
Stump removal takes things a step beyond grinding by extracting the entire stump along with a significant portion of the root system. Instead of a grinder, we use heavy-duty equipment to cut through the roots and lift the stump completely out of the ground. The biggest benefit? You’re left with a clean, open space—making it much easier and quicker to plant new trees or shrubs in that spot, since most of the roots are gone too.
Root grinding is sometimes done along with stump grinding, though it isn’t always required. When it is, our crew targets the visible roots around the stump—either as a substitute for or in addition to grinding the stump itself. This extra step gives your yard a smoother, more polished look and helps protect your lawn equipment from damage caused by hard, buried roots.
Skip the DIY methods and weekend crews with borrowed gear. Drilling holes and dumping chemicals? It’s risky—and rarely gets the job done.
