Stump Grinding Services in Roseville, Michigan

Using a chainsaw to remove a stump usually isn’t the smartest choice—and here’s why. Chainsaws are powerful tools that should only be handled by trained users wearing proper safety gear like chaps and eye protection.

Plus, if the blade hits dirt or rocks, it can quickly damage the saw—possibly leaving you with a costly repair bill that’s more than hiring a professional in the first place.

And in the end, DIY results rarely measure up to the clean, efficient job you’ll get from a commercial-grade stump grinder in the hands of a skilled crew.

Burning stumps isn’t just dangerous—it’s actually illegal in many areas across the U.S. And even where it’s permitted, it’s almost never a good idea. Stump fires are unpredictable and can smolder for days or even weeks, requiring constant supervision to prevent them from spreading. Most people simply aren’t equipped to manage that kind of risk safely.

Technically, yes—you can rent and use a stump grinder yourself. But it’s usually not a great idea. These machines are powerful and can be dangerous without proper training. In many cases, hiring a professional is not only safer but can actually cost less than renting the equipment and risking damage or injury.

If your property sees regular foot traffic or you’re planning to sell in the next decade, stump grinding is almost always a smart investment. Stumps pose safety risks, invite pests, and hurt your curb appeal—so removing or grinding them down is usually well worth it.

Stump grinding prices can range widely based on a few key factors—like stump size, tree species, the number of stumps, and how easy the area is to access.

Generally, grinding a small stump might cost less than \$100, while removing a large or difficult-to-reach stump could run \$2,000 or more.

It really comes down to your goals and budget. Stump grinding is generally more affordable and quicker, but it leaves the roots in place. Stump removal, on the other hand, clears out the entire stump and root system, giving you a clean slate—but it usually costs more because it requires heavier equipment and extra labor.

Stump grinding doesn’t come with many downsides, but it’s not always the best fit for every situation. For instance, getting a stump grinder into tight or hard-to-reach areas can be challenging. Also, since grinding leaves the roots behind, some tree species may send up new shoots from those remaining roots over time.

Yes, it’s possible for trees to sprout new growth from a leftover stump—especially species like willows, poplars, and ashes. But nearly any tree can try to grow back. That’s why stump grinding is strongly recommended. While it doesn’t completely eliminate the chance of regrowth, it significantly cuts down the risk by removing the main source of energy for those shoots.

Stump grinding typically goes 4 to 6 inches below the surface—enough for most standard yard uses. That said, every property is different, so we evaluate each situation to determine the best depth for your specific needs.
