Preparing Your Trees for a Michigan Winter
Michigan winters can be rough on trees, even the ones that are native to our area. Some emerge in spring
Skip to content Trees bring more to your property than just beauty—they add serious value. They boost curb appeal, help lower your energy bills, clean the air, and even cut down on erosion. But they’re not self-sufficient. Without regular maintenance, trees can go from being a benefit to a real hazard. That’s why working with a professional tree service is key. The right team has the tools, experience, and know-how to keep your trees healthy and your property protected.

Adding new trees can totally change the look and feel of your property—but only if they’re planted properly. The right installation gives your trees a healthy start and helps avoid safety issues down the line. Our arborists follow trusted industry best practices to ensure each tree is placed correctly and set up to thrive for years to come.
Sometimes tree removal is the only safe or practical option—whether the tree was planted in the wrong spot, has become diseased, or poses a risk to your property. When that time comes, it’s crucial to work with a licensed, insured, and experienced tree service like Treemendous Tree Care. Our team is equipped to handle removal jobs of all sizes, safely and efficiently.
Regular trimming and pruning isn’t just about looks—it’s essential for your trees’ health. It also gives our skilled arborists a chance to catch any early signs of trouble, like disease or structural issues, before they turn into bigger problems. Let our team take care of your tree pruning, so your trees stay strong, healthy, and looking great year after year.
Tree problems don’t wait for business hours. Whether it’s a fallen branch or storm damage in the middle of the night or over the weekend, emergencies can happen anytime. While some tree services are tough to reach after hours, Treemendous Tree Care is always on call. Day or night, you can count on us to respond fast and take care of the issue safely.
Tree removal isn’t always straightforward—some jobs are tricky and even dangerous. That’s where our crane-assisted removals come in. With our fleet of cranes, we can safely take down even the biggest or most hazardous trees without putting your property at risk. This method also lets us work with zero impact to your landscape, so your yard stays just as spotless as we found it.
Trees can face all kinds of issues—diseases, pests, fungal infections—but the good news is many of them are treatable. Our team can take a close look, figure out what’s going on, and apply the right treatment, whether that’s insecticides, fungicides, or nutrient boosts. We also offer preventative care to help your trees stay strong and fight off problems before they even start.
Michigan’s weather can be tough on trees—high winds and storms can leave your yard littered with branches, leaves, or even downed trees. Cleaning it all up can be overwhelming, and sometimes even dangerous. That’s where Treemendous Tree Care steps in. We’ll handle the cleanup, clear the hazards, and get your property back to normal—quickly and safely, without the headache.
Tree removal often results in one or more unsightly stumps left around your property. But we can help by grinding these stumps down to ground level. This not only restores the aesthetics of your landscape, but it also helps eliminate potential trip hazards and frees up needed space so that you can plant new trees to replace the ones that have been removed.
Proper tree maintenance provides a wealth of benefits for residential and commercial properties alike. A few of the most important benefits include:
Regular tree care does a lot to keep your trees safe—from trimming risky branches to making sure the tree is growing with proper balance. It also gives our arborists a chance to take a close look and catch any warning signs before they turn into serious problems.
Consistent tree care can make a big difference in your tree’s health. When trees are pruned regularly, checked often, and given the support they need—like proper watering, mulching, and preventive pest treatments—they’re much more likely to stay strong, healthy, and full of life.
Unhealthy or poorly maintained trees can drag down your property’s value—but well-cared-for trees do the opposite. Healthy trees boost curb appeal and can make a big difference when it’s time to sell, attracting more interested buyers and adding real value to your home.
Trees help to shade your home from the harsh summer sun, which helps to keep your home cooler and prevent your air conditioner from having to work constantly. Trees also help to shield your home from harsh winter winds, which will help keep your home warmer during the winter.
Big, mature trees do more than provide shade—they’re also great at soaking up water through their roots. This helps cut down on runoff around your property and can lower the risk of flooding that might damage your home or belongings.
Tree roots stretch out far and wide, working like natural anchors to hold the soil in place and slow down erosion. This not only keeps your property’s grading intact but also helps stop large areas of soil from washing away—whether it’s in a residential yard or a commercial lot.
One of the underappreciated benefits trees provide is their ability to reduce noise around your property. This is especially valuable for homes and businesses that are located close to roads, schools, or industrial areas.
Healthy trees do more than just look good—they provide essential homes for birds, squirrels, insects, and other local wildlife. By giving these animals food, shelter, and shade, you’re playing a part in keeping Michigan’s ecosystem strong, diverse, and in balance.
From frigid winters to invasive insects to devastating storms, Michigan trees must contend with a number of threats. However, some of the most common problems we see affecting our clients’ trees include:
Trees in Michigan are vulnerable to a range of serious diseases like oak wilt, anthracnose, and beech bark disease. While some cause only minor visual damage, others can be lethal—killing even healthy, mature trees in a matter of weeks if not treated promptly.
A number of native and invasive insects and other pests threaten trees in St. Clair Shores. Emerald ash borer is one of the most notorious, but there are many others, including pine sawflies, two-lined chestnut borers, tent caterpillars, spruce spider mites, and wooly adelgids.
Even healthy trees don’t always grow the right way. Sometimes, their structure isn’t strong enough to support their size, which can lead to broken limbs—or in some cases, the whole tree coming down. Issues like codominant stems, weak branch attachments, or poor trunk taper need to be taken seriously and checked out right away.
Some trees grow slower than expected, and it’s often due to things like pests, disease, or low-quality soil. When growth stalls, it can delay the benefits you’re hoping to see. The upside? A knowledgeable arborist can usually figure out what’s holding your trees back and recommend treatments to help speed things up and get them thriving again.
Trees that are stressed, water-deprived, or plagued by pathogens may shed their leaves prematurely – often before the summer has even concluded. Determining the reason for your trees’ premature leaf drop is crucial, so that you can provide them with the care they need to restore good health.
Fungi aren’t all harmful—many actually help break down dead plant and animal matter, keeping natural areas clean and balanced. But some types are dangerous. These harmful fungi can infect trees, weaken their structure, and, if left untreated, cause serious or even catastrophic damage.
Trees need regular care to stay healthy—but that doesn’t mean just anyone should be trusted to do the work. Trees take decades to grow, and maintaining them is a long-term investment. One wrong cut from an inexperienced “tree guy” can undo years of growth—or worse, put your home and loved ones at risk. Unqualified crews often lack the proper training, equipment, and safety practices to handle tree work responsibly.
