Preparing Your Trees for a Michigan Winter
Michigan winters can be rough on trees, even the ones that are native to our area. Some emerge in spring
Skip to content Trees bring more to your property than just good looks—they add lasting value. They boost curb appeal, lower energy bills, clean the air, and help prevent erosion. A few of the most common tree-care services we provide include:
Adding new trees can totally elevate your property—but only if they’re planted the right way. Proper installation gives them a strong start, helping them grow healthy and reducing future safety risks. Our arborists follow trusted industry standards to ensure your trees are placed correctly and set up for long-term success.
Whether it’s because they were planted in the wrong location, are suffering from disease, or are presenting safety issues, trees occasionally require removal. When this becomes necessary, it is vital that you choose a licensed, insured, and experienced tree-service provider, like the professionals at Treemendous Tree Care. We can handle any tree-removal project, from small to large.
Regular trimming and pruning does more than enhance your trees’ appearance—it plays a key role in keeping them healthy. It also gives our trained arborists a chance to catch early signs of disease, decay, or structural problems before they get worse. Let our experienced team handle the pruning, so your trees stay strong, vibrant, and beautiful for years to come.
Tree emergencies don’t stick to a 9-to-5 schedule. Storm damage or falling branches can strike at any time—weekends, late at night, you name it. While some companies are hard to reach during off-hours, Treemendous Tree Care is always ready. No matter when trouble hits, you can count on us to respond quickly and handle the situation safely.
Tree removal can get complicated—especially with large or risky trees. That’s why we offer crane-assisted removal. Our crane equipment allows us to take down even the most challenging trees safely and efficiently, without putting your property in danger. Plus, this method lets us remove trees with little to no impact on your landscape, leaving your yard just as clean as it was before we arrived.
Trees can suffer from a variety of diseases, pests, and fungal infections, but many are easy to treat. Our crews can inspect your trees, identify the problem, and then apply the insecticides, fungicides, or supplements your trees need to thrive. We can also provide preventative treatments for some ailments, which will prepare your trees to ward off threats before they occur.
Michigan’s harsh weather can take a real toll on your trees—high winds and storms often leave your yard covered in branches, leaves, or even fallen trees. Cleaning it all up can be a big job—and sometimes dangerous. That’s where Treemendous Tree Care steps in. We’ll handle the debris, make your yard safe, and get everything back to normal—quickly and without the stress.
Tree removal often results in one or more unsightly stumps left around your property. But we can help by grinding these stumps down to ground level. This not only restores the aesthetics of your landscape, but it also helps eliminate potential trip hazards and frees up needed space so that you can plant new trees to replace the ones that have been removed.
Proper tree maintenance provides a wealth of benefits for residential and commercial properties alike. A few of the most important benefits include:
Regular tree care plays a big role in keeping your trees safe. From cutting back hazardous branches to making sure the tree is growing evenly, ongoing maintenance helps prevent accidents. It also gives our arborists a chance to spot any early warning signs of trouble before they become serious.
Regular tree care can do wonders for a tree’s health. When trees are pruned on a recurring schedule, inspected frequently, and provided with the supportive care they require (including proper irrigation, mulching, and preventative pest control), they are more likely to remain vigorous and vibrant.
Neglected or unhealthy trees can hurt your property’s value, but healthy, well-maintained trees do the exact opposite. They enhance curb appeal and can be a big selling point, drawing in more potential buyers and adding true value to your home.
Trees provide natural temperature control for your home. In the summer, their shade helps keep things cooler, giving your air conditioner a break. In the winter, they act as a wind barrier, reducing cold drafts and helping your home stay warmer.
Big, mature trees do more than provide shade—they’re also great at soaking up water through their roots. This helps cut down on runoff around your property and can lower the risk of flooding that might damage your home or belongings.
Tree roots spread out like natural anchors, holding soil in place and helping slow down erosion. This is important for keeping your property properly graded and preventing large amounts of soil from being washed away—whether it’s a home or a commercial lot.
One often overlooked benefit of trees is their ability to reduce noise. They act as natural sound barriers, which is especially helpful for properties near busy roads, schools, or industrial areas.
Healthy trees do more than enhance your landscape—they provide essential habitat for birds, squirrels, insects, and other wildlife. By offering food, shade, and shelter, you’re also playing a role in supporting Michigan’s vibrant and balanced ecosystem.
From frigid winters to invasive insects to devastating storms, Michigan trees must contend with a number of threats. However, some of the most common problems we see affecting our clients’ trees include:
Trees in Michigan are vulnerable to several serious diseases, including oak wilt, anthracnose, and beech bark disease. While some may only cause cosmetic issues, others can be deadly—capable of killing even healthy, mature trees within weeks if not treated promptly.
A number of native and invasive insects and other pests threaten trees in Roseville. Emerald ash borer is one of the most notorious, but there are many others, including pine sawflies, two-lined chestnut borers, tent caterpillars, spruce spider mites, and wooly adelgids.
Even healthy trees can grow in ways that make them unstable. If the structure isn’t strong enough to support the tree’s weight, it can lead to broken limbs—or worse, the entire tree falling. Problems like codominant stems, weak branch connections, or poor trunk taper are serious and should be inspected by a professional as soon as possible.
Sometimes trees grow slower than expected—pests, disease, or poor soil could be the reason. When that happens, it delays the benefits you're hoping to enjoy. The good news? A knowledgeable arborist can usually diagnose the issue and provide treatments to help your trees grow stronger and faster.
Trees that are stressed, water-deprived, or plagued by pathogens may shed their leaves prematurely – often before the summer has even concluded. Determining the reason for your trees’ premature leaf drop is crucial, so that you can provide them with the care they need to restore good health.
Fungi aren’t always harmful—in fact, many are beneficial, helping break down dead organic matter and keeping outdoor spaces healthy and balanced. But some fungi are pathogenic and can seriously damage trees. If left untreated, they can weaken a tree’s structure and lead to major safety risks.
Your trees deserve consistent, expert care—and that’s not something you should leave to just anyone. Trees take decades to grow and need proper maintenance over the years. One mistake from an untrained “tree guy” can undo all that effort in seconds. Even worse, unqualified crews without the right equipment or safety knowledge can put your home and family at serious risk during pruning or removal work. Hiring true professionals is the only way to protect your trees—and your property.
