Preparing Your Trees for a Michigan Winter
Michigan winters can be rough on trees, even the ones that are native to our area. Some emerge in spring
Skip to content Taking down a dead or damaged tree might seem like the toughest part—until you’re left with a large, unsightly stump. But it’s more than just an eyesore. Stumps can be tripping hazards, attract unwanted pests and wildlife, and even spread disease to healthy trees nearby.
That’s why it’s best to take care of them sooner rather than later. At Treemendous Tree Care, we make stump removal easy and hassle-free for homeowners and businesses across Macomb Township, Michigan.
Removing stumps is the final step in proper tree removal—but choosing the right team for the job matters just as much.
It’s not a job for someone with a rented grinder and a pickup. There’s too much at stake. An inexperienced crew could leave parts of the stump behind, damage your lawn, strike underground utilities, or even spread disease to your healthy trees.
Instead, contact the professionals at Treemendous Tree Care! We have a team of stump-grinding professionals who have the tools, equipment, and expertise to get the job done correctly (and safely)!
Some folks think stump removal is optional, but we usually suggest it for both homeowners and businesses. Here are a few solid reasons to go ahead and have those stumps ground down or completely removed:
Tree stumps are a serious tripping hazard, especially on commercial properties where they can lead to liability claims or even lawsuits if someone gets injured.
Hitting a tree stump with a lawnmower can seriously damage the equipment—and in extreme cases, it could cause blade fragments to break off and become dangerous projectiles.
Tree stumps are a magnet for pests—rats, mice, chipmunks, snakes, and frogs often move in. They also provide ideal shelter for bees, wasps, termites, roaches, and spiders.
As stumps decay, they become hotspots for harmful fungi and bacteria. These microbes can spread, posing risks to your family, pets, and nearby healthy trees.
While trees enhance curb appeal, stumps have the opposite effect. They make your yard look unkempt and overlooked—not exactly the first impression you want to give.
One benefit of removing a tree is making space to plant something new—whether it’s flowers, shrubs, or another tree. But that’s only possible once the old stump and roots are completely removed.
Tree stumps can sometimes send up new shoots that develop into small trunks. The issue is, these shoots are often poorly anchored, making them unstable and potentially dangerous as they grow.
Tree stumps can hurt your property’s value since potential buyers often view them as an extra cost and project they’ll have to deal with.
Tired of those stumps—and the pests and safety issues they bring? Give Treemendous Tree Care a call. Whether you’ve got one stump or a whole yard full, our skilled team will handle it safely, efficiently, and with care. While all stump removal services aim to achieve the same end result, we offer a few tailored options to fit different needs and property types. You can choose from three main approaches:
Stump grinding is by far our most popular service—and it’s easy to see why. We use a high-powered grinder with a sharp, spinning blade to turn the stump into wood chips and dust. Typically, we grind down the stump and leave the roots behind. Whether you want it level with the soil or a few inches below, we’ll adjust the depth to match your preferences.
Stump removal goes further than grinding by pulling out the entire stump along with much of the root system. Instead of using a grinder, we bring in heavy-duty equipment to cut through the roots and lift the stump out of the ground. The major advantage? You’re left with a clear, usable space—perfect for planting new trees or shrubs, since most of the root structure is gone.
Root grinding is sometimes paired with stump grinding, but it’s not always necessary. When included, our team focuses on removing visible roots around the stump—either instead of or in addition to grinding the stump itself. This added step gives your yard a cleaner, more finished appearance and helps protect your lawn equipment from damage caused by tough, buried roots.
Forget the DIY tricks and part-time crews with rented gear. Drilling holes and pouring in chemicals? It’s risky—and usually ineffective.
