Tree trimming is an important aspect of tree maintenance that provides a wealth of benefits. A few of the most noteworthy advantages pruning provides include:
Removing dead, dying, diseased, or unstable branches helps reduce the risk of property damage and keeps people and pets safe beneath the tree.
Proper tree pruning boosts a tree’s health by helping it use resources more efficiently. It also lowers the risk of pests, disease, and decay spreading.
Pruning improves a tree’s overall health, which can lead to more foliage growth. Removing a branch can also prompt surrounding branches to grow new leaves.
Pruning lets more sunlight into the canopy and boosts airflow, which helps prevent fungal and bacterial problems from taking hold.
Trees may block sidewalks, driveways, sightlines, or things like power lines. But professional pruning can remove the branches in these areas and restore complete access.
While each tree has its own charm, most look their best with regular pruning. It keeps the canopy healthy with strong, live branches and helps the tree maintain an attractive shape.
Pruning trees the right way and at the right time of year can increase flower and fruit production. That’s why orchards stick to strict pruning schedules for optimal results.
Skilled arborists can control a tree’s size by carefully pruning key branches. Starting this routine early in the tree’s life leads to the best results.
Pruning helps keep trees healthy and reduces the chance of major branch breaks that can invite pests and disease. It’s a great way to extend your tree’s lifespan.
Because you can have your trees pruned to accomplish a number of different goals, arborists have developed a number of different tree pruning methods and strategies to achieve the desired results. A few of the most common tree pruning services Treemendous Tree Care clients require include:
Crown thinning involves selectively removing branches from inside the canopy to improve airflow and increase sunlight. It’s typically done on mature trees while preserving the canopy’s natural shape.
Crown raising, also known as crown lifting, removes a tree’s lower branches to provide more clearance for people, vehicles, or nearby structures. It’s commonly used on mature trees in urban or suburban areas.
Crown reduction lowers the overall size or height of a tree without the decay risks that come with "topping." It also helps keep the canopy looking good and appropriate for the tree’s species.
Crown cleaning is the selective removal of dead, dying, or damaged branches from a tree’s canopy. While it doesn’t usually reduce size or improve airflow, it supports the tree’s health and increases safety.
Pollarding is a pruning technique used to keep a tree small through annual trimming. It’s not suitable for all tree species and must be done correctly to avoid damage, but it’s ideal for limited spaces.
These two similar techniques are designed to achieve specific, often unique, aesthetic goals. For example, trees can be pruned to grow flat against a wall or shaped into distinct forms like spheres.
Structural pruning is usually done when trees are young. It promotes strong growth, proper form, and structure, helping prevent future problems and supporting long-term health.
Homeowners and property managers should always keep an eye out for a few signs and symptoms that indicate their trees may require pruning. Always contact a professional arborist if you see any of the following signs:
Dead or dying branches are a serious safety risk, particularly near people or property. They can also indicate pests or disease may be present.
Diseased or decaying branches should be removed quickly to prevent the issue from spreading and to give your trees the best chance at a full recovery.
Branches that have suffered damage from severe weather or some other cause should be evaluated and potentially removed. This can help keep your trees safe and prevent injuries or property damage.
Branches that cross or rub together should typically be removed, as they can cause damage over time and may result in bark inclusions.
Trees with too many internal branches can block sunlight and airflow, increasing the risk of fungal and bacterial diseases.
Some trees grow unevenly, shifting their center of gravity and raising the risk of windthrow. Pruning is often the best solution to restore balance and stability.
Branches that grow into power lines, press against structures, or block paths should be removed to keep the area safe and prevent future issues.
Some trees are meant to block sightlines, but that’s not always the case. If a tree ends up blocking a view, pruning is often an effective way to correct it.
If trees aren’t producing enough fruit or flowers, pruning can make a difference. But to get the best results, it’s important to make the right cuts and time the pruning properly.
If it’s been more than 3 to 5 years since your last pruning, that’s another clear sign it’s time to call in a professional. Even trees that don’t exhibit any of the signs discussed above will generally benefit from regular trims, so contact Treemendous Tree Care and let us schedule a pruning visit today!
