Preparing Your Trees for a Michigan Winter
Michigan winters can be rough on trees, even the ones that are native to our area. Some emerge in spring
Skip to content Trees bring major benefits to both homes and businesses, controlling erosion, cutting energy costs, managing runoff, and boosting curb appeal and property value. But when a tree becomes damaged, diseased, or dangerous, removal may be the smartest move. That’s when you need experienced pros who know how to handle it safely.
When it’s time to remove a tree, bringing in professionals is always the safest choice. Even small trees can pose serious risks if removed improperly—don’t take chances with your safety or your property. And while someone with a chainsaw and a pickup truck might seem like an easy option, proper tree removal takes training, experience, and the right equipment. – You need to rely on professional arborists, like the ones at Treemendous Tree Care. Our crews have the skills, experience, and equipment needed to get the job done safely, efficiently, and without damaging your property. We’ve been providing tree removal services in Sterling Heights since 2019 and have made a name for ourselves in the community.
No two trees are the same—things like size, location, species, and overall health all factor into how a removal job needs to be handled. That’s why every project is a little different. But no matter what you’re dealing with, Treemendous Tree Care has the right tools and know-how to take care of it.
Here are some of the most common tree removal services we provide:
Sometimes, the simplest method is the most effective—cutting the tree at its base and guiding it down with ropes. This cost-effective option avoids the need for climbers or heavy equipment, but it’s only suitable when there’s enough open space for the tree to fall safely.
Using bucket trucks and aerial lifts, our crew removes trees from the top down, one piece at a time. This method is often faster and safer—especially for trees that are too unstable to climb.
When bucket trucks or lifts can’t reach, our experienced climbers step in—removing the tree piece by piece from the top down. If the tree is too unstable to climb safely, we’ll recommend an alternative method to ensure the job gets done without risk.
In some cases, using a crane is the safest and most efficient way to remove a tree—especially if it’s near your home, valuable structures, or in a hard-to-reach area. Cranes give us precise control, making it easier to handle large trees and reduce the risk of damage to your property.
When a tree is on the verge of falling—or has already landed on a home or building—it needs immediate attention. The tough part is finding a tree removal company that can act fast when it really counts. That’s where we step in. We’re proud to respond quickly and handle the situation without wasting time.
Some tree removals are simple—but others can be a real challenge. If a tree is tangled in power lines or leaning against another tree, the job gets riskier fast. These tricky situations require expertise, and that’s where Treemendous Tree Care comes in. Our certified arborists have the training and experience to handle complex removals safely and efficiently.
We get it—your landscaping matters. That’s why we offer zero-impact tree removal designed to protect your lawn, prevent soil compaction, and preserve nearby plants while we work.
Your Treemendous Tree Care representative will discuss the best type of tree removal for your specific situation and answer any questions you may have.
We love trees—that’s why we do what we do. But the truth is, not every tree is in the right spot. In some cases, removing a tree (or several) can offer real benefits. Here are a few reasons why it might be the right call:
Trees can pose serious safety risks—especially in high-traffic areas near homes, businesses, or walkways. Since no tree is entirely risk-free, many property owners opt to remove them from these locations to minimize hazards and boost peace of mind.
Maintaining a lush, healthy lawn can be tough when large trees are nearby. Their roots compete for water and nutrients, and their dense shade can keep your grass from getting the sunlight it needs to thrive.
You may enjoy having a tree in your yard, just not the specific one growing there now. Removing it gives you the chance to plant something that better fits your landscape, aesthetic, or future plans.
Some trees are non-stop mess maker, nconstantly shedding leaves, petals, fruit, or seeds and making your yard a never-ending cleanup project. Removing these high-maintenance trees can save you time and hassle, letting you enjoy your outdoor space instead of always tidying it.
Some trees produce large amounts of pollen, which can be a major trigger for allergies—not to mention a mess on your car every spring. Removing high-pollen trees can help reduce allergy symptoms and keep things a little cleaner around your property.
Trees can provide excellent privacy, but sometimes they block views you’d rather enjoy. Whether you want a more open, airy feel or better visibility around your home or business, removing certain trees can help—and in some cases, it can even boost your property’s value.
Sometimes, tree removal comes down to personal preference; you might just not like the tree, and that’s reason enough.
Other times, it’s a matter of safety or necessity. A certified arborist should be the one to assess the situation, but here are some common warning signs that a tree could be hazardous:
If the soil around your tree is lifting or heaving, it’s a serious warning sign. This could mean the roots are failing or the ground is unstable—either of which could lead to the tree falling. Keep people and pets clear of the area, and contact Treemendous Tree Care right away for an expert assessment.
A tree that’s in poor health isn’t always dangerous—but it can be a sign that the risk is growing. Some diseases move fast and can kill a tree within weeks. If you notice things like dieback in the crown, stunted growth, unusually small leaves, or yellowing foliage, it’s time to bring in a professional for an inspection.
Trees sometimes drop limbs that are damaged or compromised by pests or fungi. While this can be part of a tree’s natural response, frequent or unexplained limb loss is a red flag. It may signal structural weakness or underlying health issues. If you’re seeing this, it’s smart to have a certified arborist inspect the tree before it becomes a bigger risk.
If you notice fungus near a tree—even something as small as mushrooms around the base—it’s a sign you shouldn’t ignore. That growth could be targeting the roots, slowly weakening the tree from below. Many types of fungi rot the wood inside, leaving the tree brittle and more likely to break or fall, even in calm weather.
Tree cavities might seem harmless or even picturesque, but they’re often signs of significant internal decay. What looks like a small hole could actually indicate extensive rot inside the trunk or branches—damage that weakens the tree’s structural integrity and increases the risk of breakage or collapse.
When a tree starts shedding its bark—unless it’s a species known for naturally peeling bark—it’s often a sign of stress from pests or disease. Once the bark comes off, the inner wood is exposed, and the tree can no longer move nutrients effectively from its leaves to its roots. In many cases, bark loss is a serious warning sign, and the tree may die soon after.
Trees adjust to their environment as they grow. When a tree matures in a protected area—such as within a cluster of other trees—it may not build the structural strength to withstand strong winds. If surrounding trees are removed and it becomes exposed, even a healthy tree can become unstable and prone to falling.
