Preparing Your Trees for a Michigan Winter
Michigan winters can be rough on trees, even the ones that are native to our area. Some emerge in spring
Skip to content Taking down a dead or damaged tree may seem like the hard part—until you’re left with a big, unsightly stump. But a stump is more than just something that ruins your yard’s look. It can be a tripping hazard, attract pests and wildlife, and even spread disease to healthy nearby trees.
That’s why removing stumps sooner rather than later is the smart move. At Treemendous Tree Care, we make stump removal simple and stress-free for homeowners and businesses throughout Warren, Michigan.
Removing stumps is a crucial finishing step after tree removal—but it’s equally important to have the right team take care of the job.
This isn’t a task for someone with a truck and a rented grinder. Too much can go wrong. An inexperienced team might leave parts of the stump behind, tear up your yard, hit underground utility lines, or even spread disease to nearby trees.
Instead, contact the professionals at Treemendous Tree Care! We have a team of stump-grinding professionals who have the tools, equipment, and expertise to get the job done correctly (and safely)!
Some folks think stump removal is optional, but we usually suggest it for both homeowners and businesses. Here are a few solid reasons to go ahead and have those stumps ground down or completely removed:
Tree stumps pose real tripping hazards, and on commercial properties, they can even open the door to liability claims or lawsuits if someone gets hurt.
Running a lawnmower over a tree stump can do real damage to the machine—and in the worst cases, it might send broken blade pieces flying, turning them into dangerous projectiles.
Tree stumps attract all kinds of pests—rats, mice, chipmunks, snakes, and frogs often settle in. They also create perfect hiding spots for insects such as bees, wasps, termites, roaches, and spiders.
As stumps decay, they often turn into breeding grounds for harmful fungi and bacteria. During the breakdown process, these microbes can spread, putting your family, pets, and nearby trees at risk.
Trees boost curb appeal, but stumps do the exact opposite. They leave your yard looking messy and neglected—not the kind of first impression you want to make.
One upside to removing a tree is the chance to plant something new—like flowers, shrubs, or even another tree. But that can’t happen until the old stump and roots are fully cleared out.
Tree stumps can sometimes send up new shoots that develop into small trunks. The issue is, these shoots are often poorly anchored, making them unstable and potentially dangerous as they grow.
Tree stumps can lower your property’s value because potential buyers often see them as an added expense or project they’ll need to take care of.

While stump removal services all seek to achieve the same basic goal, we do offer a few different options designed to suit property owners and managers in different situations. There are essentially three options available:
Stump grinding is one of our most requested services—and for good reason. With a powerful grinder equipped with a sharp, rotating blade, we turn the stump into wood chips and dust. Typically, the roots remain while we grind the stump itself. We can cut it level with the ground or several inches below the surface—tailored to suit your needs.
Stump removal takes things a step beyond grinding by extracting the entire stump along with a significant portion of the root system. Instead of a grinder, we use heavy-duty equipment to cut through the roots and lift the stump completely out of the ground. The biggest benefit? You’re left with a clean, open space—making it much easier and quicker to plant new trees or shrubs in that spot, since most of the roots are gone too.
Root grinding is sometimes done along with stump grinding, though it isn’t always required. When it is, our crew targets the visible roots around the stump—either as a substitute for or in addition to grinding the stump itself. This extra step gives your yard a smoother, more polished look and helps protect your lawn equipment from damage caused by hard, buried roots.
Forget the DIY tricks and weekend crews with borrowed equipment. Drilling holes and pouring in chemicals? It’s risky—and almost never effective.
Instead, count on the pros at Treemendous Tree Care. Since 2019, we’ve been providing safe, reliable stump grinding for homes and businesses in Warren—and we’re ready to handle yours too!
