Preparing Your Trees for a Michigan Winter
Michigan winters can be rough on trees, even the ones that are native to our area. Some emerge in spring
Skip to content Taking down a dead or damaged tree might seem like the toughest part—until you’re left with an unsightly stump in your yard. But it’s more than just an eyesore. Stumps can pose tripping hazards, attract pests and unwanted wildlife, and even spread disease to other healthy trees nearby.
That’s why it’s smart to remove them sooner rather than later. At Treemendous Tree Care, we make stump removal simple and stress-free for homeowners and businesses throughout St. Clair Shores, Michigan.
Stump removal is the final, essential step in any tree removal project—but choosing the right team for the job is what really ensures it’s done right.
This isn’t work for someone with a rented grinder and a truck. There’s too much that can go wrong. Inexperienced crews might leave part of the stump behind, tear up your yard, hit underground utility lines, or even spread disease to your other trees.
Instead, contact the professionals at Treemendous Tree Care! We have a team of stump-grinding professionals who have the tools, equipment, and expertise to get the job done correctly (and safely)!
Some folks think stump removal is optional, but we usually suggest it for both homeowners and businesses. Here are a few solid reasons to go ahead and have those stumps ground down or completely removed:
Tree stumps are a serious tripping hazard—especially on commercial properties, where accidents can quickly lead to liability issues or lawsuits.
Hitting a tree stump with a lawnmower can seriously damage the equipment—and in extreme cases, it could send sharp blade fragments flying, posing a major safety risk.
Tree stumps attract all kinds of unwanted pests—rats, mice, chipmunks, snakes, and frogs often settle in. They also offer perfect hiding spots for bees, wasps, termites, roaches, and spiders.
As stumps break down, they turn into breeding grounds for harmful fungi and bacteria. These can spread and pose risks to your family, pets, and surrounding trees.
While trees enhance your property's appearance, stumps have the opposite effect. They make your yard look unkempt and uncared for—not the impression you want to leave.
One of the perks of removing a tree is opening up space to plant something new—like flowers, shrubs, or another tree. But that’s only doable once the old stump and roots are fully cleared out.
Tree stumps can sometimes send up new shoots that develop into small trunks. The issue is, these shoots are often poorly anchored, making them unstable and potentially dangerous as they grow.
Tree stumps can lower your property’s value because potential buyers often see them as a future expense and a project they’ll need to take care of.

While all stump removal services aim to achieve the same end result, we offer a few tailored options to fit different needs and property types. You can choose from three main approaches:
Stump grinding is one of our most requested services—and it’s easy to see why. We use a high-powered, fast-spinning grinder with sharp teeth to turn the stump into wood chips and dust. Typically, we remove the stump itself while leaving the roots behind. Whether you prefer it ground level with the soil or a few inches below, we’ll adjust the depth to suit your property and plans.
Stump removal goes beyond grinding by pulling out the entire stump along with much of the root system. Instead of grinding it down, we use heavy-duty equipment to cut through the roots and lift the whole stump out. The main advantage? You’re left with a clear, open space—perfect for planting new trees, shrubs, or reworking your landscape without leftover roots in the way.
Root grinding is frequently paired with stump grinding, though it’s not always required. When needed, our team focuses on grinding down the exposed roots near the stump—either separately or in combination with the stump itself. This added step gives your yard a smoother, more finished appearance and helps protect your lawn equipment from damage caused by tough, hidden roots.
Forget the DIY shortcuts and part-time crews with rented tools. Drilling holes and pouring in chemicals? It’s risky—and usually ineffective.
