Preparing Your Trees for a Michigan Winter
Michigan winters can be rough on trees, even the ones that are native to our area. Some emerge in spring
Skip to content Having a distressed, diseased, or dead tree removed can be quite a relief. Until that is, you look down and see the large and unsightly stump left behind! But while tree stumps can ruin the overall aesthetic charm of your property, they aren’t the only cosmetic issues. In fact, stumps serve as dangerous trip hazards and provide a refuge for pests and nuisance wildlife. In some cases, they may even serve as a reservoir for diseases that may spread to your surrounding trees.
For all of these reasons and more, you should always have tree stumps removed as quickly as possible. Fortunately, Treemendous Tree Care makes that easy for homeowners and business managers in Clinton Township, Michigan.
While it is critical to remove any stumps left behind following tree removal, it is equally critical that you rely on true professionals to get the job done.
You don’t want to trust this kind of work to anyone with a pickup truck and rented stump grinder – the stakes are simply too high. Unprofessional and inexperienced stump removal crews may not only fail to properly address the stump, but they may even damage your landscape, severe utility lines, or expose your existing trees to illness.
Instead, contact the professionals at Treemendous Tree Care! We have a team of stump-grinding professionals who have the tools, equipment, and expertise to get the job done correctly (and safely)!
While some consider stump removal to be an optional service, we almost always recommend it to our residential and commercial clients alike. A few of the key reasons you should consider having all stumps ground or removed include:
Tree stumps are a serious trip hazard that can lead to serious injuries and even potential lawsuits in some cases (particularly when the stumps are located on commercial properties).
When lawnmowers run over tree stumps, they can become seriously damaged. In a worst-case scenario, they can even cause portions of the blade to become high-speed projectiles.
Rats, mice, chipmunks, snakes, frogs, and other creepy crawlies often take up residence in tree stumps. Additionally, stumps can serve as shelter for bees, wasps, roaches, termites, and spiders.
Many harmful fungi and bacteria will slowly feed on decaying tree stumps. This leads to a proliferation of harmful microorganisms, which can put people, pets, and trees at risk.
While trees may improve the curb appeal of a home or make a commercial property look attractive, stumps do the opposite. They create an unkempt appearance that few find appealing.
Having the opportunity to plant shrubs, flowers, or a new tree is one of the few silver linings of having a tree removed. But you can’t do these things until you have the existing stump and roots removed.
In some cases, tree stumps may produce new shoots, which will eventually grow into new trunks. And unfortunately, these shoots are rarely attached to the stump well, meaning that they’ll represent a hazard over time.
Existing tree stumps will almost always reduce a property's value, as any prospective buyers will need to factor in the costs of stump removal.
If you’re ready to say goodbye to tree stumps and the rodents, bugs, and safety issues they present, contact Treemendous Tree Care. We’ll gladly visit your property and help with all of your stump grinding needs. Whether you have one stump you need ground or 50, our expert team will carry out the work professionally, safely, and efficiently, so that you can get back to enjoying your property properly.

While stump removal services all seek to achieve the same basic goal, we do offer a few different options designed to suit property owners and managers in different situations. There are essentially three options available:
The most common tree service requested, stump grinding is a process that relies on the use of a large piece of equipment, fittingly called a stump grinder. Essentially a large spinning blade with numerous teeth, the stump grinder gradually grinds the hard tree stump into a pile of nothing more than wood chips and dust. With traditional stump grinding, the stump itself will be removed, but the roots will be left intact. We can grind the stump down until it is level with the surrounding soil, or we can grind it a few inches below grade, if you prefer.
Instead of grinding the stump down, stump removal entails the physical removal of the entire tree stump and large portions of the root structure. But while a stump grinder is not necessary for this, we will use heavy machinery to help cut the roots and stumps and then pull it free of the ground. One of the benefits of stump removal is that you’ll be free to plant new shrubs or trees in the area sooner, as a significant portion of the roots are removed during the process.
Root grinding may or may not be performed alongside traditional stump grinding. When having root grinding work completed, you’ll see that our crew targets any exposed roots in the area, rather than (or in addition to) the stump itself. Root grinding can be helpful for leaving a more polished final look than simply having the stump ground. It can also help protect lawnmowers and other equipment from damage.
Don’t rely on inexperienced stump grinders using rented equipment or DIY “hacks” involving drilling holes into tree stumps and pouring dangerous chemicals inside. These approaches are not only unlikely to work, but they may even be dangerous!
